A practical specification guide for importers comparing three important Turkish aquaculture products.
Start with the scientific name
Common trade names are not precise enough for a purchase order. European sea bass is Dicentrarchus labrax and gilthead sea bream is Sparus aurata. A product marketed as Black Sea salmon may be rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, rather than Atlantic salmon. The supplier should state the scientific name on the specification, health documents and label artwork. This prevents a familiar marketing name from becoming a customs or customer complaint.
Define the product before comparing price
Ask whether the fish is whole round, gutted, headless and gutted, or filleted. Record the size grade, permitted tolerance, fresh or frozen condition, freezing method, net weight, pack format and shelf life. For frozen fish, confirm whether weight is declared before or after any protective ice glaze. A low price per carton says little until net saleable weight and processing format are aligned.
Sea bass and sea bream are often bought whole or gutted for retail counters and foodservice. Trout may also be offered as fillets or portions. Availability varies by producer and season, so these formats are questions for the supplier, not promises Avalon should make in editorial copy.
Check the cold chain and documents
For chilled product, request the packing date, stated storage range, expected remaining shelf life at arrival and temperature monitoring plan. For frozen product, request production and best-before dates, storage temperature and loading records. The destination country determines the required health certificate, establishment approval, label language and catch or aquaculture declarations.
Certification logos should appear only when the named farm, processor and shipment are within certificate scope. Ask for certificate numbers, issuing bodies, validity dates and product scope. Do the same for Halal or customer-specific programs.
Confirm with the supplier

• Farm and processing establishment
• Format, size grade and tolerance
• Net weight, glaze percentage and packing
• Fresh or frozen condition and storage temperature
• Shelf life at production and expected at arrival
• Certificate scope and validity
• Destination label and health-document requirements
